The wood carvings in the old city are impressive. It was wonderful
to be able to stay in Durbar Square which is extremely beautiful

and the Nepali people are friendly and helpful. There are very good
restaurants and souvenir shops in Thamel

Something needs to be done about the air pollution caused by motor vehicles
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?

around Durbar Square where, everyday, I am able to visit the vegetable
market as well as the local shops where I can sit & drink chai,
enjoying the activity around me
- What changes would you recommend?
1) Bring flower sellers back to Kasthamandap - encourage the use
of this area for selling vegetables & flowers & discourage vehicles
using Durbar Square as a thorough fare

region. Buy fresh vegetables of the street sellers has also been
a highlights. Seeing old friends I like very much also
- What changes would you recommend?
Stop charging tourists to enter Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, Swayambu,
etc. I refuse to pay to enter such places as I believe it is corrupt
to charge (and particularly corrupt to charge only "tourists" or
ACTUALLY non-SAARC tourists) entry fee to visit holy places where
I venture to receive a blessing. If I wish to pay surely I can leave
a donation which I'll be more inclined to leave
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
1) go to India instead. Theirs is less of a "tourist tax" mentality
whilst many of the great aspects of Nepal exist also in India in

- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
1) Hanging around Durbar Square - people watching
2) Walking through the ancient alleyways of the city
3) Visiting temples and monasteries
- What changes would you recommend?
Kathmandu is too touristy. In 25 years this city has developed from
Nepal to the West too quickly. I cannot imagine what this once beautiful
city will look like in another 20 years. I think Nepal should slow
down its development, there are too many tourist shops and its really
depressing. I know business is business but Kathmandu and Pokhara
are too much like the West which is nothing to be proud of. If development
keeps up this beautiful country will be ruined by Western influence.
Please Nepal slow down and don't forget your cultural and traditional
heritage because this is priceless and irreplacable unlike cheap
and nasty Western business
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
Eat Dal Baaht at local restaurants and don't drink coke or Pepsi,

for me I cannot afford it and I wonder if this is only to attract older a richer tourist.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
Save a good lot of money, because if you want to see/do something
it'll cost you a lot! You pay allready quite a lot for a visa and
really every nice place is paying…
- Female, 22, Japan
- Male, 53, France
- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
1) Kindness and smiles of the Nepali people
2) Street life of the Old Kathmandu
3) Beautiful old buildings and temples

2) Maintain the traditional architecture and avoid building high rise concrete houses
3) Fight agains pollution (fumes from cars, trucks, MOTORCYCLES,
plastic: forbid the use of plastic bags, treat waters before flowing them into the river)
4) Improve cleanliness (river sides), garbage collection
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
No advice: just go and get lost in the old streets and bazars of Kathmandu
- Female, 21, Japan
- Female, 26, Netherlands
- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
The image of the city. It's a capital but with features of a big

what advice would you give to him or her?
1) To do a lot of trekking in the mountains, beautiful!

in the mountains (no bills of 500 Rs. because they can't change in the mountains)
- Male, 51, UK
- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
The people scenery + religion
- What changes would you recommend?
More eco friendly planning, I was in Nepal 25 years ago and it is
sad to see what has happened in places like Pokhara. Stop using
plastic bags. India has become a nightmare of plastic litter. Please
Nepal don't make the same mistake

what advice would you give to him or her?
Be very careful about hygine and where you eat.
- Female, 36, France

Nepal is very nice place
- Male, 26, Australia
- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
I like the food here, especially Newari food. Nowadyas it is also
very cheap to stay here. I enjoy walking through the markets and
the smaller streets, Thamel is not so enjoyable. Friendly people.
- What changes would you recommend?
1) I would recommend some sort of program to reduce the pollution
in Kathmandu. I see pollution as a major problem here. Local people
and visitors will suffer health problems if nothing is done. I would
ask that tourism development be directed differently so that Kathmandu
does not all look like Thamel
2) As in most Asian countries waste management is a problem here.
I would like to see less plastic bags being used by retailers. Also
more drinking water refill facilities, this could be a profitable
business for someone and would reduce plastic waste.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
1) I would say don't stay in Thamel, stay in Freak Street
2) Try to eat in local restaurants, so you can meet real locals
and support local economy!
3) Make an effort to lear some local language (more than just namaste)
4) Don't use motorized transport if possib le so as to not contribute to the pollution problem

- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
Boudhanath, for it's spiritual context, the Tibetan culture, the monks.
- What changes would you recommend?
As a tourist, I found hard to find the names of the streets when
walking, so this could be more clear, maybe.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
Be careful when you cross the street!
- Female, 33, UK
- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
Taking in the sights and sounds of everyday life, especially within
the old parts of the city. Visiting not only the three main squares
in and around Kathmandu but also going in search of and exploring
the various shrines and temples in the city. Lastly, but not least
is that Nepal as a whole has been a refreshing change from the unfortunate
hassles one experiences in India.
- What changes would you recommend?
Although the tourist area of Thamel is very pleasant & has some
wonderful shops, etc. I do not believe that this area should encroach
further on to the old city as the city as a whole would become spoilt,
as has happened in many places around the globe. It is important
to preserve history, architecture and tradition, not only for the
tourist to experience but more importantly for the people of the country.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
1) Advise them to respect local beliefs, values and customs
2) Inform them that although on the whole the food here is wonderful,
there is a large chance of coming ill or so appears & to advise
them to stock up on medication!
3) To barter in shops, but at the same time keep in mind how much
an extra Rs. 50 for instance is to a Nepali in comparison to how
much it is to them & therefore to be a little bit flexible.
- Female, 27, UK

- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
I have enjoyed exploring the many and varied temples, markets and
especially the narrow and twisting roads of the "old part" of the
city. The architecture of many of the buildings is quite stunning.
All most all the people (local) that I've met have been very kind
and helpful. Nepali people as a whole have a wonderful nature and great smiles.
- What changes would you recommend?
Better control on the amount of vehicles entering both Drubar Square
area and the old city would be beneficial to both locals and visitors
i.e: less pollution, less chance of an accident. Tighten and enforce
building restrictions so as to help keep over development under control.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
To enjoy themselves but to be mindful of how they act or react when
in the company of local people. To try and do as Nepali's do and
remain calm and not lose their temper when things appear to be going
against them. To always ask permission before photographing people
and to show respect at temples and shrines. To remember they are
visitors in another peoples country.

Kathmandu is a very colourful city, and I will never forget her.

- Male, 42, UK

The friendly people. The living cultural traditions (religious)
- What changes would you recommend?
The area around the temples should be made a traffic free zone.
The cars and motorcycles etc move through the area in a dangerous
& chaotic way and are a danger to Nepalis & tourists alike. Esp. at night time.

200 Rs. Or 20 Rs; Patan Durbar Sq 200 Rs. Or 20 Rs; Baktapur Durbar
Square: I'm not going. 10 US$ CRAZY! Two class society (tourist)
it cannot work out. We had it in Germany before… dangerous.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
Bargaining, the most people speak fantastic prices, first. Better
for business with tourists is fix fair price. My thinking is the
Nepali people can sell more. I feel sorry for Nepal about the political
situation. A wonderful country you are visit. You have great experiences
never forget in your life.
- Female, 70, US

1) To visit temples around and in Kathmandu
2) the kindness of Nepali people
3) Some streets around Durbar Square

TOO MUCH PAYING PLACES, AND WHAT ABOUT "TICKETS"? (money directly in the pocket, perhaps?!)
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,

- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
Durbar Square, temples, atmosphere not much hasle from street sellers as in India.
- What changes would you recommend?
Make peace with the maoists and tourists will be more willing to
come. If you are in Nepal you know it's safe but news reports in
Britain and Europe give bad impression.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
Don't pay more than NRs. 200 for a room if you are on a budget.
Try a trek: the beauty of the Himalayas is magnificent.
- Male, 39, Netherlands
- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
For a first time visitor all of Kathmandu is interesting. There
is the great architecture of the temples, the enormously elaborate
woodcarving, so many shops, crafts, trades, so many faces, so many
ways people dress, either or most to express their religion. It
is just not possible to name one separate thing.
- What changes would you recommend?
1) More electro vehicles
2) I found the sight of some severly disabled people begging in
the street and the way they are overlooked by their fellows-nepali
heart breaking. I hope they could e.g. get a bottom line amount
of money from the government to be at least secure in life
3) Even as economics are hard, people offering services should not
get so pushy. Many tourists would find Nepal so cheap compared to
"home" that cheap (even cheaper) as an argument does no longer work.
They would be willing to pay MORE, I think if: a- quality is better
(either like home or more purely, original nepali), b- reliability/trustworthyness.
Many offerings are made for a cheap cat-drive after which pushy
efforts are made to get you in to the hotel of a relative, while
you had already chosen your hotel. A "no" should be taken as a "no."
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
Stay at Annapurna Loge: frendly people, good service, good comfort.
- Male, 36, Netherlands
- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
City life, barber shop, to my opinion sellers and shop keepers became
less insistant than about 10 years ago.
- What changes would you recommend?
1) It would be nice to have a good INDEPENDENT (Gut?) agency that
could recommend and give details about trekkings to be made. We
were looking for the tourist office at Durbar Sq. but we couldn't
find it. Even if it moved, it is still a good place to have some information.
2) Reception by hotel-touts at the airport was a bit unpleasant.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
Take immodium, go to Annapurna lodge, Freak Street is a nice quiet
area to stay. Thamel has become too touristic - nicer to stay in
an area where also a lot of Nepali people live.
- Male, 26, Denmark
- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
Prices, talking to people who weren't trying (too hard) to get into
my wallet, the whole experience of being outside Europe. Learning
to hackle. Learning of development projects such as the ACAP and
the Hannuman Dhoka Durbar Square World Heritage Site.
- What changes would you recommend?
1) CLEANING THE STREETS!
2) Make hostels for the beggars.
3) Make price-guide on common goods (I mean, mostly food, toilet-paper
and such) - I don't like being cheated out of 450 rupees for 2 kilos of dry milk
4)Ban motor vehicles from such places as Durbar Square (and others,
if possible.) They disturb the peacefulness of the city, which I much enjoy.
5) Put up more public garbage bins and maintain them! Often I had
to carry my garbage with me all day because the garbage bins had no bags in them!
6) Encourage restaurants - also the expensive ones- to specialize
in Nepali food! It's much easier for the tourist to get a pizza
or a burger than to get dahl bat (or what it's name is.)
7) Replace the "Discourage the beggars" signs with "Don't encourage the beggars."
8) Focus more on traditional Nepalese culture in developing the
city, rather than Western values, trade marks and such. I didn't
come to Nepal to drink Carlsber (although I do) and buy Northface
trekking equipment (although I do.) I came to Nepal to experience
the nature and the people, to talk to hindus and buddhists (we have
muslims in Denmark), on the whole, to experience the NON-Western way of life.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
Bring as little as possible from home- buy things when you get to
Nepal (which is what I was told.) Don't miss the experience of the
Nepali nature. Don't spend all your time in the big cities. Don't
let yourself be discourage by the constant hassle from street salesmen
who won't take no for an answer. Talk to the "ordinary" Nepalese folk.
- Male, 29, France
- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
The street children and the girls!
- What changes would you recommend?
1) Less police and army!
2) less tax on hotels, restaurants, temples, airports and wilf life
sanctuaries, trekking permits, …(what money is left for the "poor" Nepalis?)
3) Less advertising for alcohol
4) Less concrete constructions
5) Better water supply
6) less private cars in historical areas (against pollution)
7) Improving Nepali restaurants agains unhealthy Western food.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
- Male, 31, Switzerland
- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
Shopping! Just TOO many nice shops! I cannot stop buying… The charming
feeling around the old part of town. Shopping again… what do do??
- What changes would you recommend?
1) Thamel is ugly; too new, NO CHARM and too expensive…
2) Built traditional Nepali/style, not Chinese concrete monsters!
3) Stop these totally unneeded, usless police-boxes around Durbar
Square (for what 200 Rs??) Else, I like it here very much.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
1) Bring enough money for shopping!
2) Take your time (at least one month)
3) Have fun!

The variety of cultures combined into one big melting pot, all living
and happening at the same time. The variety of food is good. The
people for being in a large city are pretty friendly.
- What changes would you recommend?
1) Less unrest
2) Less corruption
3) No cars or motorized vehicles in Durbar Square.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
1) To go!
2) To find a balance between trekking and visiting the other attractions of Nepal.

4) To stay outside of Thamel, for a more authentic stay
5) Find a place to volunteer time
- Female, 39, UK
- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
1) The hospitality of the people & their friendliness
2) The architecture, temples, small lanes & courtyards
3) The old town
4) Watching the people go about their daily lives & performing their religious ceremonies
- What changes would you recommend?
I strongly suggest you do something about the pollution! It is disgusting,
dangerous & not healthy for anybody, especially the locals who are
born & raised here. I have been sick for 3 weeks because of it,
one of those weeks I had to be confined to my bed as I was so ill. BAN LOW-GRADE PETROL.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
I would tell them that there is more to Nepal than trekking, that
the country offers such a wide variety of things to do & see, especially
with the locals & that the most touristed areas of Nepal are not
necessarily the best places to go to. I would also tell them that
tourist food is O.K. but Nepalese food is much better so they should be more adventurous.
- Female, 29, US
- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
The room in the sky overlooking Durbar Square… watching Nepali life.

Yes and not listen to the news.
- Female, 18, Germany

All. The stupas & religious temple we love! It's also intereting
to see other people (help poor people)
- What changes would you recommend?
I think in last years are already too much changes. I prefer the old Nepal.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
We've many friends they want to stay in Nepal. We always give them
tips and also visit cards from good hotels and tell them places we like.
- Male, 35, Germany
- Female, 20, Germany
- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
The atmosphere here in Freak Street - nice people.
- What changes would you recommend?
It would be great if there would be a program to collect and avoid
rubbish, to keep the streets cleaner (otherwise it's also Kathamndu
& flair to be dirty). And there should be palns against air pollution.
It would be great to stroll around at night in town - but that's
now not possible because the emergency.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?

give money to all the beggars and don't give anything to the street-children
(better to give a donation to an organisation such as Shanti Lepra Aid or others.)

- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
1) The multitude of temples/stupa's, within walking distance or bus ride away
2) The cultural diversity is staggering, old and new SEEM to co-exist, without problems
3) The choice of restaurants + hotels (more so in Thamel) is also
impressive (also include range of internet access)
- What changes would you recommend?
1) Some traffic calming measures! Even though I have felt strangely
safe on transport, I worry about the safety of pedestrians, particularly children or the aged
2) Litter points, to try and reduce street rubbish
3) Street maps, distributed at guest houses (for a small fee)
4) Abolition of the child workforce
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
1) Try and avoid "bandh" periods. I have the utmost sympathy for
the people of Nepal who are living under this condition, when called
by the Maoists, but from a purely tourist point of view, it really
minimises what you can do, and where you can go (which of course is it's ultimate aim.)
2) Definitely go trekking. I was in awe of the ever changing scenery
to be found on Annapurna circuit and base camp.
3) Shop around, for everything!
4) Try and learn some Nepali, I have enjoyed using what little I have acquired
5) Don't always go to the obviously touristy restaurants, or avoid
local buses, this is where you meet the people of Nepal.
6) Don't be too shocked when strangers talk to you, and Nepalese
help each other out without question. (This was a shock to a Westerner,
as increasingly we seem to have lost all sense of community spirit.)
7) At a holy site/ Durbar Sq. etc… be aware of strangers who take
great interest in explaining the surroundings to you. They're probably
a guide. If you don't want a guide, be firm and say no. If you do
want a guide, establish an expected fee beforehand
8) Expect people to spit in front of you, a lot! In the street,
on buses, etc. (Considered normal in Nepal, not so in the West, generally)
9) Read the whole guidebook, then you can work out how long to spend
in each place. Ideally ou should include, Terai (Chitwan), Hillside
towns, busy cities and mountain areas to appreciate Nepal's diversity.

- What have you liked most about your stay in Kathmandu?
Kathmandu represetns for me centre of Asia with a large cultural
mix. It's quiet a clean city and everything is possible to find in this place.
- What changes would you recommend?
Problem for me is the mind of Kathmandu shops and traders: they
ask 10 times the real price for everything and don't give any consideration
to cheap budget travellers who were the first to come in Nepal and
the only ones who still come despite of political problems. Money
get the mind of Nepal in her net…
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
No come if you don't need to do it… situtaion (politics) is bad,
traders will consider you as a money purse and it's still very difficult
to stay in real Nepal: I mean in the mountains away from trekking
costes. It's a wonderful country but for sure this is not the good time to go!

Educate the local people not to throw their rubbish down onto the
street, & put litter bins all round Kathmandu so people have no
excuse to drop rubbish everywhere. ALSO: Teach people not to pit
everywhere. It's a dirty habit & it SPREADS DISEASE.

2) Very friendly and always smiling people
3) My toilet paper
4) The food, although I got some problems
5) Kathmandu Valley
- What changes would you recommend?
Paying for entering Durbar Square is not what I like. Why should
I pay to enter a market? And what happens with my money? What do
they use it for? I'm sure, the officers put it in their pockets. I do not pay for that.
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
1) Bring toilet-paper!
2) Always discuss about the price with anyone. The first price is always the tourist price
3) Expect the unbelievable: chaos in the streets, trash everywhere.
4) Come here and enjoy Asia. You'll either love it - or not!
5) SMILE!!
- Female, 28, US

4) My practice in a hospital (medical student)
5) Just hanging around in Durbar Square, sitting on a temple and watching street life

2) Decrease corruption - It's crazy to see these differences between poor and rich
3) Pollution (air) is really bad in Kathmandu
4) Traffic will increase - and it's bad actually
5) Tourism brings a lot of money to Nepal - but the "fast money"
isn't always the best money
6) Give education to everybody
7) TRANSPORTATION: It's O.K for me, but I think it's this experience
of transportation. Although there are too many accidents (bus.)
It must be hard travelling like that all the time.
8) FOOD: Food is excellent here. But for me, it's not necessary
to serve pizza, pasta, … on a whole trek in the countryside. I hate
getting a coke everywhere - This fucking company even sells his
drinks on Mt. Everest, I think. And all this advertisments and paintings
of Coca Cola on really old houses - it destroys culture
9) BUREACRACY: Is awful here. Copys of your passport, passport number,
copy of the visa, getting stamped every ticket, …
10) TOURIST ATTRACTIONS: If I pay 750 rupees for Bhaktapur it's
even a lot of money for me. If this money is really taken for rebuild,
renovate, … it's O.K. If it's true that most of the money you pay
for visiting Durbar Square of Kathmandu goes into the pocket of
some people, it's ridiculous- you keep on destroying your country with corruption.
11) HOTELS: I think Kathmandu is situated on a tectonical instable
region. You must expect earthquakes - my question: is it wise to
build that high houses in that style? It's often said, that there
is hot water 24 H. If there is no hot water all the day, why is
it said? I don't like rooms with cockroaches in it
- If you had a good friend who was thinking of coming to Nepal,
what advice would you give to him or her?
1) Don't be afraid of cockroaches!
2) Try to be friendly most of the time, although it's sometimes
hard. Nearly everybody wants to sell anything to you, guide you anywhere, …
3) Respect the culture, people, religion
4) Treat people here, like you want to be treated by tourists in your home country
5) Don't support begging children (Adults) who make a "sport" out
of it. I could kill these tourists that started giving sweets to
children. Their future is education, not saying "give me sweets, one rupee, a school pen…"
